Meteor - 12.12.11 - 23.04.42 UTC, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada

Footage reveals it entered the atmosphere at a shallow angle of 25 degrees, moving about 14 km per second. It first became visible over Lake Erie then moved toward the north-northeast. [...] Peter Brown, the Director of Western’s Centre for Planetary & Space Exploration said that data garnered from the remote cameras suggest that surviving fragments of the rock are likely, with a mass that may total as much as a few kilograms, likely in the form of many fragments in one gram to hundreds of a gram size range. [...]
In a press release, UWO said the fireball’s burned out at an altitude of 31 km just south of the town of Selwyn, Ontario. It is likely to have dropped small meteorites in a region to the east of Selwyn near the eastern end of Upper Stony Lake.
Der Verlöschungspunkt ist doch recht hoch, oder?

Der Verlöschungspunkt ist doch recht hoch, oder?
Oder doch nicht? :nixweiss:
The cameras were able to track the fireball’s descent for about 10 seconds travelling at 14 km per second. The meteor continued to penetrate deep into the atmosphere at an altitude of about 30 kilometres, which meant the fireball was “massive,” Mr. Brown said.
“The long duration of 10 seconds, along with the deep penetration and low velocity are all rare things. It suggests strongly that some rocks survived and made it to the ground,” he said.

nabend...

Moin Jens.

WOW!!!

Eine Radiosendung zum Thema mit einem Interview mit Peter Brown von der University of Western Ontario:
Have You Seen This Meteorite? (15.12.11, CBC Radio, 6:33 Min.)
Astronomer Peter Brown explains why he hopes someone turns up with a meteorite that landed in the Peterborough area.

:einaugeblinzel:
