UNM's meteorite exhibit gets Martian influence
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —The meteorite exhibit at University of New Mexico has been in Albuquerque for more than 40 years. And in October, it got a much-needed face-lift.
Several 4.5 billion year old space Martian meteorites can now be found at the museum, including something UNM Professor Carl Agee and his crew discovered a few years ago.
They call it Black Beauty.
“It contains more Martian water than any other Martian meteorites,” Agee said.
One of the cool features at the meteorite exhibit at UNM is that they actually have a meteorite that visitors can touch. The Navajo meteorite doesn't look very big, but it weighs about as much as a small car.
“Basically, a free sample from outer space. We don't have to take a spacecraft and launch it,” said Agee.
The Meteorite Museum’s fall 2015 hours are Tuesday and Thursday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday visits are appointment-based
