MP3-DOWNLOADS:

Teil 1: Lone Ranger – From Outer Space. (15.1.1947)

Zitat
Early in the 19th century a meteor plummeted to the ground. At first frequented by scientists, interest fell off and sixty years later it had become nearly forgotten as a part of a national forrest.

High officials from Washington DC have sent for a chest of mineral samples, but the chests keep getting intercepted. The hope is for important research, but the fear is that foreign spies are stealing the samples for their own arms race. The officials call on the Lone Ranger for help.

http://media.blubrry.com/retro/p/retro-otr.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/LoneRanger470115FromOuterSpace.mp3

Teil 2: Lone Ranger – Butterfield Stage. (17.1.1947)

Zitat
A group of scientists need a mineral from a meteor, but the samples being sent back East are being intercepted from the stage coach line.

Today, Lone Ranger and Tonto discuss the plan to ride with the stage as extra guards, and to watch over the shipment unrecognized. There is an unknown government agent working on their side, and can be identified by his wearing a silver bullet. Their conversation also serves to fill in events and concerns from the previous episode.

Loaded with passengers, luggage and cargo, the Butterfield stage rolls across the prairies. The driver and shotgun rider know who Lone Ranger is, and why he’s there, but who is the mystery contact?

http://media.blubrry.com/retro/p/retro-otr.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/LoneRanger470117ButterfieldStage.mp3l

Teil 3: Lone Ranger – Silver Bullet. (20.1.1947)

Zitat
In our story thus far, the Lone Ranger has been called to the service of his country to guard special shipments of a mysterious compound that comes from a meteorite out West. Who has been steeling the shipments? Who is the mysterious contact who is the Lone Ranger’s secret counterpart in the mission? What use does the mysterious element in the meteorite contain, and what purpose will it serve with the scientists back East?

Auf der Suche mit dem Meteoritenfinder
DLR, 21.8.2011 (26.18 Min.)

Zitat

DLF, 18.8.2011 (4.10 Min.)

Zitat
Astrobiologie.

"We find the ones that are on Earth. They are the exact same structure."

"So all these things start helping us to come to the conclusion that we're looking at something extraterrestrial, that we're slowly ruling out contamination."

We are all familiar with plate tectonics and the earth's crusty covering, but what about the outer layer of other planetary bodies? It is an interesting question, because the chemical nature of a crust tells you how its parent body formed, developed and cooled and by cataloguing the crusts of planets and asteroids in our solar system we can learn more about the whole systems' evolution. So when geologist James Day came across two newly discovered meteoroids with crust that looks just like earth's he was rightly intrigued. These meteoroids probably came from an asteroid several billion years ago, but as James told me, they were only discovered in 2006

Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss the origins, science and mythology of the moon. Humans have been fascinated by our only known satellite since prehistory. In some cultures the Moon has been worshipped as a deity; in recent centuries there has been lively debate about its origins and physical characteristics. Although other planets in our solar system have moons ours is, relatively speaking, the largest, and is perhaps more accurately described as a 'twin planet'; the past, present and future of the Earth and the Moon are locked together. Only very recently has water been found on the Moon - a discovery which could prove to be invaluable if human colonisation of the Moon were ever to occur.

Mankind first walked on the Moon in 1969, but it is debatable how important this huge political event was in developing our scientific knowledge. The advances of space science, including data from satellites and the moon landings, have given us some startling insights into the history of our own planet, but many intriguing questions remain unanswered.

The Murchison Meteorite Story

Transkript:

Zitat
This particular fragment is one of the pieces of the Murchison meteorite that fell in Victoria in 1969. And it’s the most exciting meteorite because it has very primitive chemistry; it existed, we believe, before the sun turned on as a star, and indeed before the solar system really aggregated into the planets we see now.

The Murchison meteorite fell over Victoria, near the town of Murchison in northern Victoria. And the exciting thing about it was that because it fell at daytime and close to where people were living and had made such a racket when it fell, because when they come through the atmosphere not only do you see the great fiery trail, but when they get close to the ground, they explode and you hear this great roar of the explosion and it sounds like an express train. So, people knew something had happened, and they all went out and started to collect it straight away, which was really great because it wasn’t contaminated by sitting on the earth for any length of time.

When I first saw the meteorite, I found it was in a plastic bag. And when it was opened up, suddenly this great organic chemistry smell hit me, just like methylated spirits: very, very strong! And I looked in and there was this black, it looked like a lump of coal, and I knew exactly what it was straight off, it was a carbonaceous chondrite, one of the most, well, the primitive, most primitive of all the meteorites. And there it was in its very, very pristine condition; it was very exciting.

Well I was Professor of Geology at Melbourne University at the time, and we got some of the samples and immediately we analysed it to make absolutely sure that is was indeed a carbonaceous chondrite. Later on people started to do work on the organic composition of the meteorite, in which there’s about, what, 2% organic material in the meteorite and about 10% water, it’s a lot of funny things that you don’t find normally in meteorites. And the exciting thing there has been the complexity of the organic compounds they found; many amino acids, hundreds of amino acids – the building blocks of life itself – are all present in this meteorite.

When the meteorite entered the Earth’s atmosphere, it broke up and fragments were moving through the atmosphere and they were still high enough up to ablate, well, as we say, melt on the surface themselves, so each little fragment in this case, is totally surrounded by molten material, which sealed in the organic compounds.

Life is a function of the complexities of a number of organic compounds, including amino acids, complex amino acids. We wouldn’t be alive without those. And the interesting thing of course is organic compounds in the meteorite, formed in outer space, contained similar sorts of these complex amino acids. Now how one joins the amino acids that are condensing in space as part of the whole condensation processes in the solar nebula, with life on earth, is the big unanswered question.

AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:

And now to one more rare thing that came from space: a meteorite. Some of the most unusual and prized meteorites fell to Earth from Mars. In a new journal article, scientists describe the latest one that was discovered, and this weekend, you can buy a piece of it. NPR's Christopher Joyce has this story of a journey from Mars to a Manhattan auction house.

CHRISTOPHER JOYCE, BYLINE: The meteorite is called Tissint, and it contains a unique story about Mars.

CAROLINE SMITH: Many people think that this meteorite may well be one of the most important meteorites that have actually fallen in the last century.

JOYCE: That's meteoriticist Caroline Smith at London's Museum of Natural History, which owns one of the biggest pieces of Tissint. She's one of the scientists who described it in the journal Science. Tissint's journey began as volcanic rock on the Martian surface. Smith says they can tell liquid washed over the rock and deposited bits of soil in it. Then an asteroid smacked into Mars and blasted the rock into space. In 2011, it flamed through the Earth's atmosphere and smashed into the Moroccan desert. Smith notes that while NASA's robot Curiosity is now driving around Mars, meteorite experts have the real thing.

SMITH: The thing is no matter how fantastic the robotic missions are, it's still not the same as being able to actually analyze a piece of rock in a laboratory on Earth. So the - I think the big message here is that the meteorite is almost ground-truthing what we're actually seeing on Mars.

JOYCE: Tissint is also special because the impact that blew it off Mars melted part of its surface into smooth, black glass. That trapped bubbles of Martian atmosphere and elements inside. Also, its fragments were found quickly, so it hasn't been too contaminated by elements on Earth. Scientists have just begun to tease out its story.

SMITH: Whenever I pick up a meteorite, I get excited. Each of those stones is a little time capsule and a little space probe to actually help us understand how our solar system formed.

JOYCE: But the piece in London is just one of many that broke off Tissint as it hurtled through Earth's atmosphere. Where they ended up is a story that begins in Morocco. Meteorite scientist Hasnaa Chennaoui Aoudjehane had heard about the fireball in the sky. Last January, she traveled 700 miles from Casablanca, over the Sahara, to find the strewn field where pieces were spread across the sand. She was not the first one there.

HASNAA CHENNAOUI AOUDJEHANE: The first thing that I see is hundreds of people in the middle of nowhere, and this is something that I will never forget.

JOYCE: Men, women and children were camped out, hunting for the pieces. Meteorites are often found in North Africa - unusual rocks stand out in the desert - and they bring a good price. She brought some small pieces for her university in Casablanca. Professional dealers scooped up the rest. About that time, a meteorite collector and dealer in New York City named Darryl Pitt got a tip about pieces of Mars for sale. Pitt got money from investors. A Moroccan dealer sold him a piece, dispatching his au pair to fly with it to New York City.

DARRYL PITT: Immediately after she clears customs, she reaches into her purse and gives me a packet, and I'm looking around, looking at the cameras and thinking, oh, my golly, this is going to be a problem.

JOYCE: Not that it was illegal, but the transaction made it look like it. Pitt bought or brokered the sale of more pieces, including the one that went to London's Natural History Museum.

PITT: It's important to make the material available to scientists and researchers first and foremost.

JOYCE: The museum's Caroline Smith agrees that collectors and scientists do help each other.

SMITH: I would be not telling the truth if I said there was no tension with anything where large amounts of money is involved, but I would like to stress that, you know, on the whole, relationships are very good. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement in many cases.

JOYCE: On Sunday, a piece of Tissint will be offered at a meteorite auction in Manhattan. Pitt helped Heritage Auctions arrange it. He says the Martian meteorites are the stars because there are so few. All told, on Earth...

PITT: You're talking about, like, about 300 pounds of material. That's it. Mars is among the rarest substances on Earth.

JOYCE: The Tissint fragment at the auction starts at $230,000. As for potential buyers...

PITT: Most anyone who has an appreciation for the exotic, the romantic, anyone who wants to enthrall a child or anyone's sense of wonder. Radio hosts?

(LAUGHTER)

PITT: Everyone.

The swallows are coming back to Capistrano. A celebration kicks off next week at the mission in San Juan Capistrano, where the little birds have migrated for decades.

Another visitor from above descended on the California town 40 years ago today: a meteorite - a rock from beyond Earth. It crashed into the aluminum roof of a carport and split apart. The owners found the biggest piece the next morning on the floor of the carport. They found a much smaller piece about a month later while cleaning the gutter.

The pieces didn't add up to much - only about two ounces in all. But the meteorite represents a treasure to scientists, because it helps them understand more about the early solar system.

The San Juan Capistrano meteorite is classified as a chondrite. That means it contains small bits of rock that melted then resolidified long ago. Chondrites probably formed at the same time as Earth and the other planets of the solar system. As a result, they may reflect the composition of the original cloud of dust from which the planets formed - four and a half billion years ago.

This meteorite is especially valuable because it was picked up within hours of landing, so scientists know it hadn't been changed by exposure to Earth's atmosphere. It should preserve a good sampling of the materials present at the birth of the planets - an important scientific gift that descended on a California town.

Benjamin Weiss is conducting laboratory magnetic studies on rocks from Mars, the Moon, and Earth to understand the evolution of planets, magnetism, and life. He is using SQUID microscopy, a new technique several orders of magnitude more sensitive than standard SQUID moment magnetometry that makes high-resolution magnetic maps of room temperature samples.

His research team is broadly interested in the role of magnetic fields on planets in the early solar system. This area of research has all sorts of interesting implications--from the climatic history of Mars to the formation of planets.

In this interview he talks about his research and how he originally got interested in the field of paleomagnetism.

In 1923 - now, this was 1920 I went to McPherson - but in 1923, in the fall, I saw this big fireball come across one evening as we were talking in front of my friend's house. This just changed my whole picture. I had read an article about two or three weeks before this in The Scientific Monthly, which was a co-publication of the science, that journal there which is the, American Association for the Benefit of Science. This was an article about meteorites. And I was so shocked to think that while I thought I'd been pretty well educated, I had never heard anything about meteorites. And here was the most interesting thing I ever heard. I went home and told Addie, "I'm going to make a hobby of this. It's just too interesting to pass up." Then came this fireball a couple of weeks later, and I was all cocked and primed and started right in to chase that fireball. Been at it ever since!

Raoul Schrott: Erste Erde Epos - Erste Materie - 29.06.2013, BR 2013
Episode 3 / 21

Zitat

Silvester in Chile. /

Raoul Schrott: Erste Erde Epos - Erste Sonnen - 22.06.2013 , BR 2013
Episode 2 / 21

Zitat
Silvesternacht in Chile. /

Last year, an asteroid with the explosive power of 40 nuclear bombs exploded in the sky over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. No one saw it coming, because it was one of the smaller asteroids, and it was approaching from the wrong direction. Luckily, it exploded high up in the atmosphere, and the only injuries were from the flying glass of thousands of broken windows. If it had exploded lower down, it could have been a different story.

Subsequent research suggested that there are 10 times more asteroids out there like the Chelyabinsk one than we previously thought. Hardly any of them have been found. NASA is trying to find all the big asteroids that could potentially wipe out life on earth, and is making good progress, but the smaller ones are virtually unknown.

So what is Britain doing about the asteroid threat? At the top of a hill in mid-Wales is an observatory called Spaceguard UK. It's run by a retired army major called Jay Tate. Despite being officially designated as the "National Near Earth Objects Information Centre", it gets no state funding and subsists only from Mr Tate's pension, and the sales of keyrings and pencils in the gift shop. Mr Tate is one of an army of amateur astronomers who scans the skies looking for asteroids that might come close to the earth. The safety of the earth is in these amateurs' hands, he says.

One of the most prolific asteroid observers in the world is Peter Birtwhistle, who operates from a hut in his Berkshire garden. He spends over 100 nights a year looking for asteroids, often barely sleeping. When he finds one, he sends his observations to the Minor Planets Centre at Harvard, which logs known asteroids. Despite this, only two incoming asteroids have ever been detected before they arrived. One exploded over the Sudanese desert in 2008; the world got a few hours' warning because Gareth Williams at the Minor Planets Centre was woken in the night by his dog needing to go outside, and happened to check his computer.

Jolyon Jenkins speaks to the unsung army of people who are trying to keep us safe from the threat from outer space, and asks whether it's right that we depend so much on enthusiasts.

Presenter/producer: Jolyon Jenkins.

The vault at the Center for Meteorite Studies at the Arizona State University contains around 2,000 samples - meteorites from Mars, the Moon, and places unknown. Director Meenakshi Wadhwa takes Robyn Williams on a walking tour of the collection. As Meenakshi Wadhwa explains, the chemical composition of meteorites, together with analysis of trapped gases is important information which adds to the picture of the history of the Solar System, how the planets formed, and can even give clues about the origin of life.

„Silvester.

The book is to be launched at a talk on the Appley Bridge meteorite I am giving on the 100th anniversary of the fall which will be on 13th October 2014 at the Museum of Wigan Life, Wigan, Lancashire.
This is the fascinating story of the fall and find of the Appley Bridge meteorite in 1914 as told through newspaper reports and archive documents of the time. It tells the story of the confusion with enemy Zeppelins, the confiscation of the meteorite by the police and its subsequent release for analysis.
The book includes previously unseen photographs of the meteorite and images provided by various organisations around the World. The current locations of samples of the meteorite are also listed together with articles and publications on the meteorite (Russel Parry)

Das meteoritische Hörspiel zum Wochenende:

Fragments
by Laura Lomas

Radio Drama, BBC 4
Erstsendung: 6.2.2015, 14:15 UT

AUDIO (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0512jgm)

Zitat
Meteorites are more frequent than we might imagine, but few of them ever make it to Earth. They travel towards us at 40,000 mph and burn up the closer they get. Fragments of matter splinter and explode as they disintegrate. Occasionally these powerful celestial events collide with everyday life.
In this original drama, four unconnected people are heading to the North East Yorkshire coast on the day of a forecast meteorite explosion. Katarzyna has just found out her bank account has been emptied, so she cannot bring her younger sister over from Poland. Jamie is just out of prison and paralysed by fear at the thought of clearing out his dead mother's house. Michael is driving back to the spot where he and his now-deceased daughter enjoyed summer holiday. Aaron, 15 years old, believes his absent father will meet him to witness the meteorite.
Fragments is a sharp, warm contemporary drama, mixing ordinary struggles with the theatre of interstellar space. Recorded on location in North Yorkshire.

Raoul Schrott: Erste Erde Epos - Autopoiesis - 07.03.2015

Zitat

Natural Histories - Meteorites

BBC Radio 4
4.8.2015, 28 Min.
(ab heute noch 21 Tage lang zu hören)

Zitat
Brett Westwood explores how for thousands of years we have marvelled at the stones that fall from the sky. They were mysterious messages from the heavens; omens of luck and favour. Ancient Egyptians buried them in their tomb and Terry Pratchett put meteorite iron into his home made sword to enhance its mystical properties.

Myths and legends about meteorites abound in all cultures. In religious art they are visions in the sky foretelling of the apocalypse. Interest in them rocketed when it was finally accepted, as late as the 1970s that they did kill the dinosaurs, a scientific debate that took many years to settle and was hard fought. Meteorites are marvels; they are fragments of other worlds come to our home to remind us we are not alone and that above the sky there is a dynamic, restless universe.

Today people still believe meteorites contain magical minerals. The bizarre plants, Venus flytraps, only grow in the areas meteorites are found (by coincidence) and were thought to be plants brought down from another planet. We are all touched by the mystery of meteorites and today they are helping unravel the mysteries of our own solar system - and beyond.

Zitat
In 1864 a strange type of rock fell from the sky above Orgueil in rural France. Shocked and frightened locals collected pieces of the peculiar, peaty blob from the surrounding fields, and passed them on to museums and scientists.

At that time, a debate had been raging over the origin of life; Could life possibly form from mere chemicals? Or did it need some strange unidentified vital substance?

Into this debate fell the Orgueil meteorite, and because it seemed remarkably similar to loamy soil, some wondered whether it may hint at the existence of extra-terrestrial life.

The great Pasteur allegedly investigated, but disappointingly found no such thing. Nevertheless, the mere possibility prompted later ideas that the origin of life on earth indeed lay elsewhere in the universe, ideas that were greeted with varying degrees of skepticism over ensuing decades.

As Phil Ball narrates, given how much was at stake, and how bitterly scientists argued on either side, the most remarkable thing about the story is the extraordinary secret the meteorite kept to itself until exactly 100 years later.

Producer: Alex Mansfield.

'The Appley Bridge Meteorite'

The Appley Bridge Meteorite (Part I) (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0g7x9j8)
