The authors comment on the date of the formation of the Tüttensee, holding that it was not created by a meteorite in the first millennium BC as claimed in the Antiquity article, but formed at the end of the Ice Age and can have nothing to do with Phaethon and his chariot. In reply, Rappenglück et al. offer a brief defence of their thesis.

Kaum haben die das "Chiemit" herentdeckt, haben sich schon eine keltische Kultstätte (nunmehr katholisch) identifiziert,
in der das "Chiemit" verehrt wurde.

das ist doch ein BS.

Besonders krass, weil methodologisch völlig daneben:

Die Phaeton-Sage wird hergenommen als Beweis für den Chiemgauimpakt.
Und als Begründung dafür, daß die Phaetonsage einen Impakt wiedergibt, wird der (bislang völlig unbewiesene) angebliche Chiemgauimpakt und was für Phänomene dort aufgetreten sind, hergenommen.

Das nennt man:    Zirkelschuss

Unzulässig, auch in der Philologie.

Und sonst? Zero Beef.  Kein geographischer Hinweis, keine Hinweis, wie die Kunde des Impakts nördlich der Alpen, nach Kleinasien und Griechenland gekommen sei, aufdaß daraus die Phaetonsage erfunden worden sei.
Und als Datierung, ein vage alte philologische Arbeit, die spekuliert, das  Motive der Phaetonsage um 2000 v.Chr. entstanden sein könnte.
Na toll, da wurd der Streitwagen ja überhaupt erst erfunden, und da sind die Hethither, Sumerer ect. damit rumgegondelt, die noch weiter vom Schuß,
bei den ollen Veden in Indien gar auch noch der Sonnengott druff. 
Und weil der nach heutigem Stand der Dinge nie stattgefunden habende Chiemgauimpakt auf 2000 v. datiert werden söllt, sei damit bewiesen, daß die Phaetonsage den Impakt berichtet.

Das ist zwar alles aus einer Warte überaus witzig und amüsant,
aber auch völlig unseriös.
