Meteorite leaves 1.5 ft deep hole in Murshidabad village

BEHRAMPORE: Panic spread among villagers of Sarkarpara under Jalangi police station in Murshidabad after the recovery of a 2.4 kg meteorite from the village.

On Sunday early morning some people witnessed the meteorite falling from the sky. A 1.5ft deep hole was created at the village where the meteorite crashed.

Village sources said that on Sunday morning around 5.30am some villagers who work in the field came out for a morning walk and heard a huge noise of something crashing.

Later they discovered a meteorite in a field beside a pond. In the impact of the crash a 1-1.5 feet hole was created. The BSF authority of 91st battalion has kept the meteorite in its possession at Madhubona camp.

Soon they will hand over the meteorite to local civil administration for further tests.

A villager said, “This morning suddenly I heard a noise from the western side of the sky and within seconds I heard a huge noise from the far end of the village. At first I thought BGB jawans were firing bombs in our village; it was a noise like an explosion. Later I went to the spot with some villagers and found a meteorite.”

Parul Das, a resident of neighbouring Daspara village, said, “I saw something fall from the sky at high speed at Sarkarpara village on Sunday morning. I heard a huge noise. I first took it to be the sound of shelling by Bangladeshi troops from across the border. Later I realised that the stone-like thing came from the western side of the sky. So it wasn’t a bomb.”

Villagers informed the local police station and BSF authorities. Before police arrived at the spot, BSF jawans of ‘B’ Company of 91st battalion took the black meteorite in their possession. According to BSF sources the weight of the meteorite was 2.4kg.

Das frage ich mich auch langsam. Die "Meteoritengötter" mögen uns Deutsche offenbar nicht.  :crying: :traurig:

Habt ein Einsehen, liebe Götter .. :laola: ..

http://www.portal.gsi.gov.in/gsiImages/information/meteorite_fall_jalangi.pdf

Zitat
Meteorite  fall  near Jalangi, Murshidabad, W.Bengal on 08.07.2012

A newspaper report appeared on 09.07.12, describing a meteorite fall at around 5-15am of
08.07.2012 witnessed by the villagers of Sarkarpara (N24º 05’ 55’’: E88 º 41’ 28’’) near Jalangi
area in Murshidabad district, W.Bengal, about 220 km from Calcutta.  The stone was taken into the
custody by the local police station within three hours of the “fall”. On the basis of newspaper report,
the  District  Magistrate  as  well  as  the  Superintendent  of  the  Police,  Murshidabad  district  were
contacted  by  the  Director  Central  Petrological  Laboratory,  Geological  Survey  of  India,  Central
Headquarters,  Kolkata  immediately  to  confirm  the  news.  Both  the  State  Government  officers
confirmed  of  the  “fall”  and  agreed  to  hand  over  the  sample  to  GSI.  Two  officers  of  GSI,
Dr. M. Moitra and Dr. S. Nandy immediately rushed to the spot and collected the meteorite piece
weighing about 2 kg from the State Government officers on 10 th  July 2012.

According to the local observers, the meteorite came from South West sky with repeated
detonating and whizzing sound. The extra terrestrial piece of stone fell on soft soil of a
jute field making an impact crater of about six inches in diameter and eight inches in depth.

From the recorded data, it appears that the meteorite was fragmented at least two to three
times  before  touching  the  ground,  indicating  existence  of  more  pieces  of  the  same  meteorite.
However,  local  police  and  villagers  could  not  throw  any  light  in  this  regard.  GSI  officers  also
searched the locality for possible additional fragments but could not trace any. It is possible that
some pieces might be lost in adjacent Jalangi river or Ganges.
The meteorite is roughly pyramidal in shape with a flat base and four complete surfaces,
covered almost fully by thin black to brown coloured fusion crust. The surfaces are smooth, well
ablated with traces of flow lines. A few numbers of shallow regmaglypts along with one slightly
deep  and  compound  variety  are  noted  on  frontal  surfaces.  A  number  of  well  defined  visible
chondrules and minute metallic specks are also recorded. From this first hand study, this extra
terrestrial object is confirmed as a chondritic meteorite. Further specialized studies are in progress.

Analysis of a superbolide from a damocloid observed over Spain on 2012 July 13

MNRAS (2013) doi: 10.1093/mnras/stt1845 First published online: October 22, 2013

Zitat
A superbolide with an estimated absolute magnitude of −20 ± 1 was seen on 2012 July 13 over the centre and south of Spain. This extraordinary event, which was witnessed by numerous casual observers, was recorded in the framework of the continuous fireball monitoring and meteor spectroscopy campaign performed by the SPanish Meteor Network (SPMN). Thus, because of optimal weather conditions, the bolide was imaged from 10 meteor observing stations. Here we present the analysis of this magnificent event, which is the brightest fireball ever recorded by our team. The atmospheric trajectory of the bolide and the orbit in the Solar system of the parent meteoroid were obtained. The emission spectrum produced during the ablation of this particle is also discussed. We found that the meteoroid, which was following a Halley Type Comet orbit, was depleted in Na and had a tensile strength one order of magnitude higher than that corresponding to typical cometary materials. By means of orbital analysis tools we have investigated the likely parent body of this particle and the results suggest that the progenitor is a damocloid. The impact area of the hypothetical remnants of the meteoroid is also given and a search for meteorites was performed, but none was found.
