Miller Range 03346
(WKAR, Current State, 15.5.13)

Scientists look to meteorites for clues about life on Mars

Zitat
In order to find out more about the potential for life on Mars, some scientists aren’t looking up, but down. A team of researchers are examining meteorites to help determine if conditions on Mars were ever able to sustain life.

MSU geological sciences professor Michael Velbel is part of the research team. He joins Current State from Washington D.C, where he is currently serving as a senior fellow at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History.

Apropos Dr. Ben Weiss...

The SQUID, the planetary scientist and a lot of little bits of moon rock

VIDEO-LINK

Zitat
Benjamin Weiss is conducting laboratory magnetic studies on rocks from Mars, the Moon, and Earth to understand the evolution of planets, magnetism, and life. He is using SQUID microscopy, a new technique several orders of magnitude more sensitive than standard SQUID moment magnetometry that makes high-resolution magnetic maps of room temperature samples.

His research team is broadly interested in the role of magnetic fields on planets in the early solar system. This area of research has all sorts of interesting implications--from the climatic history of Mars to the formation of planets.

In this interview he talks about his research and how he originally got interested in the field of paleomagnetism.

Interview with Brother Guy Consolmagno
(Extraausgabe des Podcasts des Jodrell-Bank-Radioobservatoriums (Jodcast) , 17.5.13 / 17:27 Min, 16 MB)

Zitat
Brother Guy Consolmagno is the curator of the Vatican Observatory's meteorite collection, and also analyses the space rocks under his care. He explains how the Vatican came to own a meteorite collection, and how he has been using non-destructive techniques to test them and discover properties such as density, conductivity and magnetic field structure. He tells us about the conundrum of how dense rocks emerge from fields of apparently 'fluffy' asteroids, and what this can tell us about the ancient history of our Solar System. He also describes the problem of the weathering of meteorites once they land on Earth.

Meteor. In this International Meteor Conference Special Edition, we bring you a selection of interviews from the IMC which was held in La Palma, Canary Islands.

AUDIO-LINK

Zitat
Paul Roggemans, one of the founding members of the International Meteor Organization (IMO) tells us about the history and mantra of the IMO and how the International Meteor Conference (IMC) initially came about. He also talks about this year's conference, the plans for next year's conference and tells us how to get involved with the IMC and the IMO.

Filip Novoselnik and Denis Vida from the Astronomical Society "Anonymus" in Croatia, have detected a potential new meteor stream using the Croatian Meteor Network - a network of 30 cameras across Croatia. In their interview they discuss the method and programs they used to identify this stream and how it is that such a stream could be undetected.

Dr Johan Kero from the Swedish Institute of Space Physics talks to us about meteor head and trail echoes. In his interview, he tells us what the head and trail echoes of meteors are, how they are formed and how it is possible to detect them. He goes on to talk about the radar systems used to observe them and mentions specific instruments (the Middle and Upper Atmosphere Radar (MU Radar) in Japan and the European Incoherent Scatter Facility (EISCAT)), as well as the number and types of meteors detected on an average observing run.

Dr Gerhard Drolshagen from the European Space Agency talks to us about ESA's Space Situational Awareness program, including work on Near Earth Objects and the new Fireball Database. He begins by telling us what the Space Situational Awareness program is, and what sort of objects they look for, as well as discussing the definition of a Near Earth Object (NEO) and how they detect them. He also discusses mapping the objects in the solar system, and how they can do calculations of the orbits of objects for 100 years in the future. He goes on to tell us more about fireballs and the Fireball Database, and how the data will be freely available online, but also how the data will rely on local fireball networks, and other observers to report fireballs.

Zitat
Sirko Molau from the Arbeitskreis Meteore (AKM) in Germany tells us how meteor showers and meteor storms are formed and their differences. He also discusses the differences between showers, storms and sporadic meteors. He goes on to tell us how meteor observations are done and how the methods of meteor observation have changed in recent times. He also goes on to discuss his work on normalising observations of meteors so different showers and observations can be properly compared.

Ein sehr interessantes Tondokument.

Oral history interview with H.H. Nininger , January 28, 1976. (104 Min.)

einschließlich eines Transkripts

Ein schöner Auszug:

Zitat
In 1923 - now, this was 1920 I went to McPherson - but in 1923, in the fall, I saw this big fireball come across one evening as we were talking in front of my friend's house. This just changed my whole picture. I had read an article about two or three weeks before this in The Scientific Monthly, which was a co-publication of the science, that journal there which is the, American Association for the Benefit of Science. This was an article about meteorites. And I was so shocked to think that while I thought I'd been pretty well educated, I had never heard anything about meteorites. And here was the most interesting thing I ever heard. I went home and told Addie, "I'm going to make a hobby of this. It's just too interesting to pass up." Then came this fireball a couple of weeks later, and I was all cocked and primed and started right in to chase that fireball. Been at it ever since!

Die dritte Folge aus Schrotts auf 21 Episoden angelegtes Erste Erde Epos:

Raoul Schrott: Erste Erde Epos - Erste Materie - 29.06.2013, BR 2013
Episode 3 / 21

Zitat

Raoul Schrott: Erste Erde Epos - Erstes Licht - 15.06.2013, BR 2013
Episode 1 / 21

Zitat
Silvester in Chile. /

Raoul Schrott: Erste Erde Epos - Erste Sonnen - 22.06.2013 , BR 2013
Episode 2 / 21

Zitat
Silvesternacht in Chile. /

The Great Space Hunt

BBC Radio 4, 7. April 2014 (28 Min.)

AUDIO

Zitat
Last year, an asteroid with the explosive power of 40 nuclear bombs exploded in the sky over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. No one saw it coming, because it was one of the smaller asteroids, and it was approaching from the wrong direction. Luckily, it exploded high up in the atmosphere, and the only injuries were from the flying glass of thousands of broken windows. If it had exploded lower down, it could have been a different story.

Subsequent research suggested that there are 10 times more asteroids out there like the Chelyabinsk one than we previously thought. Hardly any of them have been found. NASA is trying to find all the big asteroids that could potentially wipe out life on earth, and is making good progress, but the smaller ones are virtually unknown.

So what is Britain doing about the asteroid threat? At the top of a hill in mid-Wales is an observatory called Spaceguard UK. It's run by a retired army major called Jay Tate. Despite being officially designated as the "National Near Earth Objects Information Centre", it gets no state funding and subsists only from Mr Tate's pension, and the sales of keyrings and pencils in the gift shop. Mr Tate is one of an army of amateur astronomers who scans the skies looking for asteroids that might come close to the earth. The safety of the earth is in these amateurs' hands, he says.

One of the most prolific asteroid observers in the world is Peter Birtwhistle, who operates from a hut in his Berkshire garden. He spends over 100 nights a year looking for asteroids, often barely sleeping. When he finds one, he sends his observations to the Minor Planets Centre at Harvard, which logs known asteroids. Despite this, only two incoming asteroids have ever been detected before they arrived. One exploded over the Sudanese desert in 2008; the world got a few hours' warning because Gareth Williams at the Minor Planets Centre was woken in the night by his dog needing to go outside, and happened to check his computer.

Jolyon Jenkins speaks to the unsung army of people who are trying to keep us safe from the threat from outer space, and asks whether it's right that we depend so much on enthusiasts.

Presenter/producer: Jolyon Jenkins.
